Jean Greenberg, associate professor of molecular genetics and cell biology, and Ho Won Jung, post-doctoral scholar in molecular genetics and cell biology at the University of Chicago, examine plants used in an experiment that discovered crucial steps in the process of plant immunity. With their collaborators, they discovered that azelaic acid primes the plant’s defenses to bacterial infection. It also stimulates the production of AZ11, a protein the researchers discovered that helps prime the plant’s immune system.
