Fluorescence Detector at Black Rock Mesa, Utah (IMAGE)
Caption
The Black Rock Mesa fluorescence detector south-southwest of Delta, Utah, is nearing completion. Large sets of mirrors are being installed in the building. Two other such such facilities and a grid of 564 table-like devices called scintillation detectors comprise the $17 million Telescope Array, which will try to identify the mysterious source of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays, the most energetic particles in the universe.
