Profiling the 'Stroma' around a Tumor to Help Guide Therapy (IMAGE)

High-throughput analyses of patient matrix profiles can act as a companion biomarker for tailored treatments to improve chemotherapies in pancreatic cancer.
The research team showed that some pancreatic tumors respond more favorably than others to the sequential 'priming therapy'. Using patient tumor samples from the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Genome Initiative, the team developed an automated analysis of tumor tissue to predict an individual tumor's response to the sequential treatment.
Dr. Timpson says, "What we're seeing is that the therapy works best for tumors with large amounts of surrounding stroma, and tumors with a high density of surrounding blood vessels."
