Fluorescence Microscopy of Maternal and Paternal Chromosomes (IMAGE)
Caption
Fluorescence microscopy of maternal and paternal chromosomes is shown at the first mitosis during the oocyte to embryo transition in the mouse. The ATRX protein (red) decorates the centromeres of maternal chromosomes (arrowhead) but is absent from paternal chromosomes revealing the inheritance of distinct epigenetic marks in parental genomes at the onset of mouse development. Kinetochores are stained with CREST antiserum (green) and chromosomes are stained with the DNA fluorochrome DAPI (blue).
