Utah State University biologists, from left, Karen Kapheim and Makenna Johnson collect live bee specimens from an Alkali bee bed near an alfalfa field in south central Washington state USA's Touchet Valley. The researchers are studying the evolution of division of labor in social bees by testing a variation of the reproductive ground plan hypothesis in solitary bees, which have no division of labor.
