Schematic of how a novel sickle cell disease testing platform developed at the University of Connecticut works with a smartphone. A blood sample is placed between two magnets and then is illuminated by an LED for imaging by the smartphone camera. Sickle cells respond differently to the magnetic field than healthy cells and can be seen on the phone's primary screen.
