This is UC Santa Cruz alumna Sarah Gerhardt surfing at Mavericks. Sarah and husband Mike Gerhardt wore heart rate monitors during a session at Mavericks, enabling UCSC biologist Terrie Williams to record one of the highest prolonged heart-rate levels ever recorded. Their heart rates averaged 90 percent of maximum (as measured in treadmill tests) for hours at a time.
