How the "virtual neuroanatomist" traces axonal connections. Though the human eye is good at filling in small gaps in lines to trace axons, computers have trouble with the task. Topological methods help the computer fill in gaps by turning what it sees into a 3D map filled with mountains and valleys. The computer then calculates likely paths from mountaintop to mountaintop.
