Wood Decaying Species (<i>Gymnopilus junonius</i>) from the Order Agaricales (IMAGE)
Caption
The image shows the wood decaying fungal species (Gymnopilus junonius) from the order Agaricales. One of the 32 accepted proposals to the DOE Joint Genome Institute's Community Science Program came from Dr. José María Barrasa of Spain's Universidad de Alcala. He noted in his proposal to study several Agaricales fungi that while many of the basidiomycete fungi involved in wood degradation that have been sequenced are from the Polyporales, many of the fungi involved in breaking down leaf litter and buried wood are from the order Agaricales.
