Methane Detection System (IMAGE)
Caption
A new system based on frequency comb spectroscopy is designed to continuously monitor for methane leaks in areas of oil and gas production. (a) The system measures gas absorption using an array of long-distance laser beams (yellow in the bottom illustration). It records how gas concentrations have changed over time (b) and then uses atmospheric models to calculate the location of the leak and its emission rate (c).
