An alpine marmot (Marmota marmota) from Lac d'Anglas, Pyrenees, France. The alpine marmot is a monogamous species in a largely monogamous lineage, which includes many other monogamous species as well as polygynous species. The evolution of monogamy is tightly associated with paternal care for the offspring.
