The Gut May Protect the Lungs During Influenza Infection (AUDIO)
Caption
The gut may be able to protect the lungs during infections with influenza. That's the finding from researchers at Washington University Dchool of Medicine in St. Louis. Studying mice, they found that when treated with a particular metabolite of a common substance in food, animals with a specific type of bacteria in their guts didn't experience as much lung damage when infected with the influenza virus.
