University of Utah materials engineer Ashutosh Tiwari and doctoral student Nathan Gray have developed a way to align the magnetic "spins" of electrons within a silicon semiconductor chip at room temperature and for a record period of time. The feat is a step toward faster, more energy efficient computers, phones and other "spintronic" devices that store data using the spin of electrons as well as their electrical charge.
