There is a belief among some in the mental health field that it's best to tackle one problem at a time. So if a patient is being treated for alcoholism, drug addiction or other psychiatric problems, there may be a reluctance to suggest that the person quit smoking, too. But new research from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that not only can psychiatric patients quit smoking safely, but kicking the habit actually may improve their mental health. Jim Dryden reports.
