The salt (which is tagged with a fluorescent tracer) flows into the upper channel after a voltage is applied by an electrode (the dark rectangle) jutting into the channel at just the point where it branches. The process can run on a store-bought battery. The voice is Kyle Knust, a graduate student in the lab of Richard Crooks, professor of chemistry at The University of Texas at Austin.
