Diagram Of Experiment That Showed Early Life Experiences of Individuals Can Impact Distribution of S (IMAGE)
Caption
The experimental setup included two configurations: HLH (high-, low- and high-quality habitats) and LHL (low-, high- and low-quality habitats). Tan patches indicate a high-quality (wheat flour) habitat, and dark gray patches indicate a low-quality (oat flour) habitat. Colors of beetles indicate natal habitat, that is, tan beetles developed in wheat flour and dark gray beetles in oat flour. Beetles initially started in the patch labeled with their species name and were dispersed in the directions marked by the black arrows. (Image courtesy of B. Van Allen/Rice University)
