Many important functions in the body, from neural development to insulin secretion, immune cell function and heart rate are controlled by key receptors various cells around the body. Now scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have shown that they can coax some of those cells to move toward a beam of light, and they say the feat may be the first step toward using light to control things like insulin secretion or heart rate.
