Individuals who have severe mental illness, like schizophrenia, don't live as long as people who aren't affected by serious psychotic problems. And in the largest-ever assessment of substance abuse among people with those illnesses, researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the University of Southern California have found that part of the reason for those premature deaths may be the alarmingly high rates of alcohol, tobacco and drug use in these patients.
