Brain Images from Children Who had Preschool Depression (IMAGE)
Caption
The anterior insula on each side of the brain (red) is smaller in children diagnosed with depression as preschoolers and kids who experienced excessive guilt as very young children. A research team led by Andrew C. Belden, PhD, found that those with a smaller insula in the brain's right hemisphere were more likely to have recurrent episodes of depression as they got older.
