Left to right: Aaswath Raman, graduate student in applied physics, Shanhui Fan, associate professor of electrical engineering, and Zongfu Yu, postdoctoral researcher in electrical engineering. The trio calculated that because light behaves differently at the nanoscale, a solar cell using a thin organic film could absorb up to twelve times as much energy from sunlight as conventional macroscale photovoltaic solar cells using silicon.
