Weather Balloon Launch for Inversion Study (IMAGE)
Caption
University of Utah undergraduate student Matt Lloyd releases a balloon that carries a package of weather sensors. An automated weather station installed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research is in the background. The university and NCAR are just ending field measurements in the Salt Lake City area as part of a three-year study of inversions that trap cold air and pollutants close to the ground in cities that are surrounded by mountains.
