After heart attacks or the progression of heart disease, scarred patches of heart tissue are often unable to transmit electrical signals (red), straining the surrounding tissue, as seen on the left. On the right, a formerly inactive patch of heart tissue has had its conductivity restored by insertion of a trio of bacterial genes.
