This scanning electron microscope image shows a single wire, tens of thousands of times thinner than a human hair, which was created in a furnace at Ohio State University. Engineers here are growing carpets of these wires on titanium surfaces to boost cell growth, with the ultimate goal of helping the body heal around bone and joint implants.
