Moths have evolved sophisticated defenses, including the long, twisted tails seen on this African moon moth, Argema mimosae, that can deflect a bat on the wing. But bats can't take credit for all moth defense mechanisms: Multiple moth lineages evolved "ears" millions of years before bats existed.
