Georgia Tech biology graduate student Chengwei Luo (left) and civil and environmental engineering assistant professor Kostas Konstantinidis display petri dishes showing that strains of commensal E. coli and environmental E. coli both grow on the media used for the fecal coliform test. Analyzing the genomes of the strains -- shown on the computer monitor -- is the only way the researchers can tell these two groups of E. coli apart.
