"When it comes to fault isolation, networks are a big black box. You put packets in on one side and you get them out the other side," explained SIGCOMM 2009 paper author Kirill Levchenko, a UC San Diego post-doctoral researcher who recently earned his Ph.D. in computer science at UC San Diego. "A lightweight network monitoring approach such as ours allows you to pinpoint the source of the performance degradation and identify the problem routers."
