The new, microsatellite-based test will replace an assay (shown here) that relies on unique alleles that occur in about 40 percent of Atlantic blue marlin (right panel). Because 60 percent of Atlantic blue marlin and 100 percent of Indo-Pacific blues do not have the unique Atlantic allele, the origin of a large percentage of samples remains unknown and unknowable using the existing test. bp stands for “base pair.”
