A set of test filters used to collect organic compounds in smoke from roadside trash fires in India were turned a rainbow of toxic colors, rather than the usual shades of gray one would expect from ambient air filtering. "One of my lab-mates thought I was looking at a panel of eye shadows," said researcher Heidi Vreeland.
