Changing the location of a single 'vacuum cleaner' molecule switches the roles of a nerve and the tissue that usually guides it through a migrating zebrafish embryo. In normal embryos, this vacuum cleaner allows the cells to keep moving forward by 'sucking up' the path behind them, Darren Gilmour and colleagues have found.
