ヘマタイトメソ結晶（約20ナノメートルの微粒子の集合体）にドーピングしたSn2+とTi4+が焼成することで熱拡散し、複合酸化物（SnTiOx）として偏析する。最表面のSnは酸化されてSnO2となっている。
