Simulation video (VIDEO)
Caption
A simulation of the magnetic field (green lines) and plasma around a black hole (left). Initially, the field lines arc from one of the black hole’s magnetic poles to the other. Over time, the field lines balloon outward, creating rows of alternating orientation. The field lines then begin breaking and reconnecting. That process creates pockets of plasma that shoot into space or fall toward the black hole.
