Dr. Manel Esteller, the Director of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC-CERCA), an ICREA Research Professor, and Chairman of Genetics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, has been selected as one of the most outstanding scientists by Stanford University in the United States. He has been included in the esteemed group representing only 0.06% of the most influential researchers globally across all scientific disciplines.

This recognition is based on a recent bibliometric analysis conducted by the Biomedical Sciences, Statistics, Meta-Analysis, and Innovation Data Center (METRICS) at Stanford University. The analysis, which considered over 204,000 researchers from various scientific fields worldwide, assessed the impact of their discoveries, primary authorship, and their significance for fellow scientists. According to the published findings, Dr. Esteller holds the impressive 123rd position in this global ranking, making him the leading biomedical researcher among his peers in Spain.

Dr. Esteller’s research primarily focuses on the mechanisms controlling human genome activity, a field widely recognized as Epigenetics. He specializes in its applications across various pathologies, particularly cancer. Dr. Esteller's groundbreaking work has not only unveiled the underlying foundations of numerous diseases but has also facilitated the development of innovative molecular tests for their detection and the approval of nine anti-cancer drugs.

This acknowledgment from Stanford University underscores Dr. Esteller's significant contributions to the scientific community and reaffirms his pivotal role in advancing our understanding of Epigenetics and its crucial applications in healthcare. Recently, Dr. Esteller was also elected member of the prestigious Royal European Academy of Doctors, which recognized his exceptional contributions in Biomedical Sciences.
