BU’s Thanh Nguyen, MD, Elected President of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology
First woman to serve as president of the society
(Boston)—Thanh N. Nguyen, MD, FRCP, FSVIN, FAHA, professor of neurology, radiology and neurosurgery at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, has been elected President of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN), the first woman to serve in this role in its 17-year history.
Previously, Nguyen was an elected board member of SVIN in 2008 and then re-elected 2014-2017. She was named a Fellow of SVIN (FSVIN) in 2012 based on her contributions to the field of interventional neurology and received the organization’s Distinguished Service Award in 2018. She was selected as research chair of the SVIN in 2013 and served as secretary in 2019-2021.
Nguyen, who also is the director of interventional neurology/neuroradiology at Boston Medical Center (BMC), received her medical degree from McGill University Faculty of Medicine, Montreal, Canada. She performed her neurology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Following her fellowship in vascular neurology and neurocritical care at MGH, she completed a fellowship in interventional neuroradiology (INR) involving more than 1,000 INR procedures at Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal. She has since performed more than 3,000 INR procedures, including more than 500 brain aneurysm interventions and 400 acute stroke interventions.
Nguyen’s clinical and research interests include endovascular therapies for stroke, brain aneurysms, and arteriovenous diseases. Her other clinical interests include diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of pulsatile tinnitus, pre-operative embolization for head and neck tumors, carotid and intracranial stenting, subarachnoid hemorrhage, spinal vascular interventions, traumatic carotid and vertebral dissection, subdural hematoma embolization, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty for acute spinal fractures.
Nguyen has authored more than 330 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to national guideline statements. She is principal investigator of the Computed Tomography for Late EndovaculAr Reperfusion (CLEAR) study, with the primary results published in JAMA Neurology. She co-led a global study to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stroke, mechanical thrombectomy and subarachnoid hemorrhage care.
She serves as associate editor of Stroke and serves on the editorial board of the SVIN journal.
She was named a fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA) in 2018 and served on the AHA Board of Director for the Boston area from 2018-2021. She was named Boston Magazine Top Doctor in Neurology in 2017-2023, the Be Exceptional Award for BMC in 2018 and received the Neurology Golden Brain Attending Award for BU medical student teaching in 2019.
