International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research

Alexandria, VA – The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) has announced Jay Patel as the 2024 recipient of the William Butler Fellowship. Patel, from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 53rd Annual Meeting of the AADOCR, which was held in conjunction with the 102nd General Session of the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 48th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 13-16, 2024 in New Orleans, LA.

Patel began the PhD program in health informatics at Indiana University School of Computing and Informatics in 2015 and joined Temple University as an Assistant Research Scientist in 2020, where he was later recruited as a tenure-track assistant professor. Patel has a unique training background in two distinct domains – clinical dentistry and informatics. Although Dental Informatics is still an emerging field, Patel has already become a part of this discipline in the last five years and has published several impactful papers, including 20 manuscripts since 2021.

Patel led the development of the first AI-empowered periodontal disease prediction model to identify high-risk patients so that dental clinicians can take preventive approaches at the right time to prevent disease initiation and progression. He has also mentored several master’s, undergraduate, and high-school students for their research projects. In addition, Patel has recently been awarded a K08 grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to establish his independent career in dental informatics.

The AADOCR William Butler Fellowship is in recognition of Dr. Butler’s many contributions to research in mineralized tissues and his prominence as a leading mentor and role model in the field. The immediate goal of this fellowship is to support researchers at the early stages of their scientific careers. The Fellowship is supported by generous donations from individuals and companies which created the endowment.
