IADR and AADOCR announce recipient of the 2023 IADR/AADOCR Journal of Dental Research Cover of the Year Award

Grant and Award Announcement

International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) and the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) have named the recipient of the 2023 IADR/AADOCR Journal of Dental Research Cover of the Year Award for the paper, “Genetic Study of Elf5 and Ehf in the Mouse Salivary Gland.” The recipient was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 102nd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the AADOCR and the 48th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 13-16, 2024 in New Orleans, LA, USA.

In this study, authors E.A.C. Song, K. Smalley, A. Oyelakin, E. Horeth, M. Che, T. Wrynn, J. Osinski, R.A. Romano, and S. Sinhafound leveraged genomic and epigenomic data of the SG to examine the expression profile of ETS genes and identified two closely related paralogs, Elf5 and Ehf, that are highly expressed in distinct epithelial subpopulations. By using a well-defined mouse knockout model of Elf5, they showed that Elf5, despite its enriched expression in the acinar cells, is functionally dispensable for maintaining the homeostatic state of the adult SG epithelium.

Their results indicated that unlike Elf5, Ehf plays a nonredundant role in directing ductal cell differentiation of the SG and highlights the phenotypic subtlety in mutant mice of closely related TFs and the importance of careful consideration of cell type–specific studies.

Selected by the IADR/AADOCR Publications Committee, the award honors the cover that features an aesthetically pleasing, scientifically novel image that enhances the impact of the article.
