Eric Reynolds named winner of the 2024 IADR Distinguished Scientist William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Eric Reynolds as the 2024 IADR Distinguished Scientist William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award. Reynolds, from The University of Melbourne, Australia, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 102nd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 48th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 13-16, 2024, in New Orleans, LA, USA.

Reynolds has more than 100 publications in the field of caries research and over 400 total peer-reviewed publications overall in a career spanning 40 years. His publications have a Web of Science impact (h) factor of 73. Throughout his career he has attracted more than $120 million for dental research from government agencies and industry. In 2003, Reynolds established the Australian government-funded National Research Center for Oral Health Science, which has become an important center for the study of oral diseases such as dental caries.

Reynolds was the 1992 recipient of the William J. Gies award for the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research. He has also received the Docking Award for outstanding science in dental research, the Australian Clunies Ross National Science and Technology Award, the Victoria Prize, and the Smorgon Award for the successful application of science and technology. Reynolds was also awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia in 2005 and in 2016 he received the Award of Merit from the Australian Dental Association. In 2017 he received the Australian Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation. In 2020, he received the European Organization Caries Research (ORCA) prize for his outstanding contribution for caries research.

Supported by Kenvue, the William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award is designed to stimulate and recognize outstanding and innovative achievements that have contributed to the basic understanding of caries etiology and/or to the prevention of dental caries. It is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR.
