(Toronto, May 1, 2025) JMIR Publications invites submissions to a new theme issue titled “The Importance of Telerehabilitation and Future Directions for the Field” in its open access journal JMIR Rehabilitation and Assistive Technologies. The premier, peer-reviewed journal is indexed in PubMed/PubMed Central, SCOPUS, DOAJ, Web of Science, Sherpa/Romeo and EBSCO/EBSCO Essentials.

The field of telerehabilitation has rapidly evolved, demonstrating its effectiveness, feasibility, and safety across various medical conditions. As outlined in the editorial, “The Importance of Telerehabilitation and Future Directions for the Field,” Dr Sarah Munce, editor-in-chief of JMIR Rehabilitation and Assistive Technologies, highlights key research priorities, including implementation challenges, health equity concerns, and emerging innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI)–driven personalized rehabilitation.

The scope of this call for papers includes but is not limited to:

  • Effectiveness and safety: comparative studies on telerehabilitation versus in-person care, including adverse event reporting
  • Implementation considerations: post-pandemic sustainability, organizational support, and clinician perspectives, including barriers and facilitators to implementing telerehabilitation
  • Health equity and accessibility: addressing digital literacy gaps, resource limitations, and improving access for equity-seeking populations
  • Innovative technologies: integration of AI, machine learning, wearable devices, and interprofessional collaboration in telerehabilitation
  • Pediatric telerehabilitation: addressing the lack of research on telehealth interventions for children with disabilities

Contributors are encouraged to submit their work by October 31, 2025. All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer-review process, and accepted articles will be published as part of the theme issue titled “The Importance of Telerehabilitation and Future Directions for the Field.”
