Reston, VA (May 30, 2025)—New research has been published ahead-of-print by The Journal of Nuclear Medicine (JNM). JNM is published by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, an international scientific and medical organization dedicated to advancing nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, and theranostics—precision medicine that allows diagnosis and treatment to be tailored to individual patients in order to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Summaries of the newly published research articles are provided below.
Obesity’s Hidden Influence on Cancer Treatment
How does obesity affect cancer therapy? Using two imaging techniques, researchers explored how diet-induced obesity changes immune activity and metabolism in breast cancer. The study in mice showed altered tumor behavior and immune response, highlighting the importance of tailored imaging tools and treatment strategies in obese patients.
A New Imaging Clue to Lung Disease Survival
In the largest study of its kind, researchers used 18F-FDG PET/CT scans to track lung inflammation in patients with systemic sclerosis–associated lung disease. They found that certain imaging patterns were linked to higher death risk, offering a promising tool to better predict outcomes and tailor treatment strategies.
Tracking Hidden Inflammation in Post-COVID Patients
Researchers used advanced PET imaging to study inflammation across the body in people recovering from COVID-19. By measuring how a special tracer, 18F-DPA-714, behaves in different organs, they uncovered distinct patterns of inflammation, laying the groundwork for better understanding and diagnosing post-COVID syndrome’s multisystem effects.
Targeted Radiation Offers Hope for Bone Metastases in Neuroendocrine Tumor Patients
Patients with neuroendocrine tumors that spread to bone face tough odds. This study tracked real-world outcomes of a targeted treatment, ¹⁷⁷Lu-DOTATATE, and found it eased pain and extended survival for many. Higher treatment doses led to better outcomes, with manageable side effects and no added risk from tumor burden.
