Announcing EULAR's new president

Business Announcement

European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR)

In 2023, EULAR welcomed Professor Daniel Aletaha to the role, but it is now time for him to hand the baton on to the next in line. We are delighted to have Xenofon Baraliakos as the new EULAR President for the term 2025-2027. Professor Baraliakos is a Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at Ruhr University Bochum and a Medical Director of the Rheumazentrum Ruhrgebiet Herne, in Germany. With a remarkable career as a rheumatologist and researcher, he has made significant contributions to the study of axial spondylarthritis and related conditions, and has authored and co-authored over 500 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including clinical trials, reviews, and guidelines – as well as presenting at numerous related conferences and events. We are confident he will lead EULAR in its mission to minimise the impact of RMDs on individuals and societies.

In this role, Professor Baraliakos will work with the EULAR Board to achieve the organisation’s core mission by promoting education, awareness, best clinical care, prevention, and research in the field of RMDs – and providing global solutions for management.

Professor Baraliakos reaffirmed the society’s vision – created as part of EULAR’s 2024–2028 strategy. “EULAR works towards a world in which all rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases are recognised, diagnosed, and ultimately prevented or cured” he said, “and I am proud to do my part as President to help drive that forward.”

Professor Aletaha will continue to serve as the Past-President and remains a member of the EULAR Board for the next two years.

The new President-Elect will be Professor Laure Gossec, previous EULAR Treasurer.
