Rockville, MD, June 24, 2025 — The National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) is proud to announce that Dr. Tony Hunter of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, CA.
Dr. Tony Hunter receives the 2025 Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research for his groundbreaking discovery of tyrosine phosphorylation, a novel and unanticipated process that has illuminated how cells respond to growth signals. This discovery in 1979 forever changed the trajectory of cancer research, opening a whole new area that made possible the development of specific cancer therapies targeted at blocking the phosphorylation of tyrosine, which have saved millions of lives worldwide.
Today, over 80 such drugs designated as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), based on Dr. Hunter’s work, are widely used to treat cancers like leukemia, lung cancer, and stomach tumors more precisely and effectively. His work continues to shape the direction of cancer biology and inspire continuing innovations in treatment.
Dr. Hunter will receive the prize at the NFCR Global Summit and Award Ceremonies for Cancer Research & Entrepreneurship on October 24, 2025, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. This event brings together top scientists, doctors, entrepreneurs, patients, and supporters to share ideas and advance the fight against cancer.
