The International Society of Microbiota (ISM) will host the 12th World Congress on Targeting Microbiota, presenting groundbreaking research that positions the human microbiome as a central determinant of health and disease across multiple organ systems.

"The microbiome has evolved beyond its traditional association with digestive health," states Dr. Marvin Edeas, Chairman of the Scientific Committee. Current research demonstrates its critical role in diagnostics, therapeutics, and systems biology. Future medical practice will increasingly integrate microbiome analysis alongside genomic profiling.

Translating Microbiome Research into Clinical Applications

The two-day congress will examine the microbiome's influence on diverse physiological processes, including aging, cardiovascular health, neurological function, and oncological outcomes.

Contemporary research has shifted from taxonomic classification to functional analysis, focusing on bioactive metabolites such as butyrate, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and serotonin precursors that exert systemic effects.

"Our approach now emphasizes microbial function and metabolite-host interactions rather than simple species identification," Dr. Edeas explains.

Advances in Gut-Brain-Immune Axis Research

A key session will address the gut-brain-immune axis, presenting evidence on microbial influences in cognitive aging and psychiatric disorders. Emerging data reveal bidirectional interactions between psychotropic medications and the microbiome, highlighting important clinical considerations.

"These findings represent a paradigm shift in neuropsychiatric medicine, enabling microbiome-informed approaches to mental health," notes Dr. Edeas.

Therapeutic Applications of Microbiome Modulation

The congress will showcase innovative therapeutic strategies including:

  • Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) applications in neurological and ophthalmological aging
  • Short-chain fatty acid derivatives for metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders
  • Targeted probiotic interventions for systemic inflammation management
  • Microbiome-guided precision nutrition protocols

Expanding Microbiome Research Beyond the Gastrointestinal Tract

Research presentations will encompass non-gut microbiomes—including oral, cutaneous, and salivary communities—as biomarkers for aging, treatment response, and immune function.

"This broader perspective transforms our understanding of the microbiome's diagnostic potential," observes Dr. Rony Abdi Syahputra (Indonesia).

Integrating Microbiome Science into Standard Medical Practice

The congress represents a fundamental shift toward recognizing humans as complex host-microbe ecosystems rather than isolated organisms.

"Within the next five years, microbiome assessment will become standard practice in clinical decision-making, comparable to routine vital signs or genetic testing" Dr. Edeas projects.

As healthcare systems address challenges including chronic disease management, antimicrobial resistance, and population aging, microbiome science offers innovative approaches to prevention, personalization, and therapeutic intervention.

Call For Innovation

You still have a time to submit your innovation for Short oral & Poster presentation and become a speaker.
