Urologic oncologist Dr. Scott Eggener named chair of urology at UCLA Health

A nationally recognized expert in urologic cancers, Eggener focuses his research on improving how prostate cancer is detected, diagnosed and treated

Following a national search, UCLA Health has appointed Scott Eggener, MD, as the chair of the department of urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and executive medical director for urology for the UCLA Health system.

Eggener is a nationally recognized urologic oncologist who joins UCLA from the University of Chicago, where he served as the Bruce and Beth White Family Professor of Surgery and vice chair of urology. He brings deep expertise in the care of patients with prostate, testicular and kidney cancers, and was the founding director of the University of Chicago High-Risk and Advanced Prostate Cancer Clinic.

“I am honored to join UCLA Health and lead a department with such a distinguished legacy in patient care, research and education,” Eggener said. “I am invigorated by all the exciting opportunities and talented people.” 

A prolific physician-scientist, Eggener focuses his research on prostate and testicular cancer, with particular emphasis on reducing the overdiagnosis and overtreatment of prostate cancer and an emphasis on clinical trials. His work has led to more than 350 publications in leading journals, including JAMA, JNCI and NEJM, and has been featured in national media outlets such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. 

Eggener is the recipient of numerous honors, including the Society of Urologic Oncology Young Investigator Award and the American Urological Association Mid-Career Award. He currently serves as associate editor of the Journal of Urology and has held editorial roles at several other leading journals. In addition, he has served on multiple cancer guideline panels for the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Urological Association and National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

He is a long-standing executive board member of International Volunteers in Urology, serves on the board of directors for the Society of Urologic Oncology, and has been a visiting professor at more than 20 institutions. 

Eggener obtained his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, completed his residency at Northwestern Medicine and his urologic oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
