ASBMB to launch Insights in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a new broad based journal publishing discoveries across molecular life sciences

New publication joins ASBMB journal family dedicated to quality science, swift publication

Business Announcement

American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Building on its historic leadership to chronicle discoveries in molecular life science, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) today announced the upcoming launch of a new gold open access journal, Insights in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IBMB). IBMB will join the recognized ASBMB family of journals dedicated to publishing outstanding science and offering swift, constructive review by and for scientists.  It also announced Benjamin A. Garcia, PhD, will serve as inaugural editor in chief of the new publication.

IBMB’s broad scope will provide a welcoming home for the full spectrum of molecular life science discovery and in every field that advances knowledge through biochemistry and molecular biology. It will also provide prompt transfer to and from the society’s other publications: The Journal of Biological Chemistry, The Journal of Lipid Research, and Molecular & Cellular Proteomics. Finally, IBMB will deploy Elsevier’s new Leap platform for submission management, providing improved experiences for authors, reviewers and editors and increased speed to publication, through a simple, seamless submission process.

Dr. Garcia is currently the Head of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics department at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. His lab is focused on the development and application of quantitative mass spectrometry (MS) based proteomics and related computation for understanding dynamic protein and proteome post-translational modifications (PTMs). Dr. Garcia brings substantial editorial leadership experience as an editorial board member of Molecular & Cellular Proteomics and as associate editor for several journals.  He is an active ASBMB member and was the 2024 recipient of the ASBMB Ruth Kirchstein Award for Maximizing Access in Science.

“Each discovery published in an ASBMB journal sparks new understanding about the infinite potential of molecular life sciences and offers pathways for further fundamental discovery and downstream translation,” said ASBMB President Joan W. Conaway.  “We are delighted to have Ben’s leadership driving this new and important addition to ASBMB’s publishing family. For more than 120 years, ASBMB’s authors have been discovering the future of science and IBMB will expand our capacity to publish important work. We also listen to and value our authors’ experiences and we are excited to add a new easier submission interface in partnership with Elsevier.”

Throughout its history, ASBMB has been at the forefront of advancing scientific knowledge, publishing significant and enduring research and enabling scientists to disseminate their research widely and efficiently.

IBMB represents the Society’s sustained commitment to authors and the science they investigate each day, as well as to the swift service and publishing experience they need to thrive in their fields,” said Walid A. Houry, chair of the ASBMB Publications Committee.  “We look forward welcoming this newest arrival in the Society’s journal publishing family.”
