ATLANTA — Two leading researchers in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University have been ranked among the most highly cited in the world, placing in the top 1 percent of all scientists and social scientists, according to the Highly Cited Researchers 2025 list by Clarivate.
The annual recognition program identifies and celebrates global research scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field of research. The selection process is designed to spotlight researchers who exemplify excellence in their research as well as integrity in their publication and citation practices.
Each researcher selected for the Highly Cited Researchers list has authored a minimum number of highly cited papers, research documents that rank in the top 1 percent by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science Core Collection over the past 11 years, and has a minimum number of citations. This list, based on citation data, is refined using other quantitative metrics, qualitative analysis and expert judgment, according to Clarivate.
The Institute for Biomedical Sciences has two researchers included on this prestigious list: Andrew Gewirtz and Lanying Du.
Gewirtz, a Regents’ Professor in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, is listed among the Highly Cited Researchers in 2025 for the cross-field category. He was also listed from 2022 to 2024. Researchers with cross-field impact have contributed multiple highly cited papers in several different fields.
Du, a Distinguished University Professor in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, is also listed among the Highly Cited Researchers in 2025 for the cross-field category. From 2021 to 2024, she was also listed in the cross-field or microbiology categories. In addition, Du has been listed among the world’s top 2 percent most-cited scientists from 2021 to 2025 by Stanford University.
Highly Cited Researchers are 1 in 1,000 of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists. The 2025 list contains 7,131 Highly Cited Researcher awards in 21 science and social science fields, presented to 6,868 individuals from 60 countries and regions who conducted research at universities, government agencies and other research institutes. Some researchers are recognized in more than one Essential Science Indicators field of research, according to Clarivate.
The rigorous evaluation and selection process for the Highly Cited Researchers list draws on data from the Web of Science Core Collection and then uses quantitative metrics and qualitative analysis to identify individuals whose work has had a genuine, global influence on their fields.
