Frontier breakthroughs in RIPK1 kinase-regulated cell fate | Master Forum

Shanghai Jiao Tong University Journal Center

On the afternoon of May 4th, the Master Forum online academic event, jointly organized by the Clinical Neuroscience Center, Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and the Editorial Office of LabMed Discovery (LMD), was successfully held. The lecture, themed “Kinase RIPK1 and Cell Fate Determination,” featured Professor Zhang Tao, a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the Songjiang Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The online lecture was moderated by Prof. Zhang Chencheng, Deputy Director of the Clinical Neuroscience Center, Ruijin Hospital. Attendees included Prof. Lu Yong, Vice President of Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine; Dr. Wang Erliang, managing editor of the LMD Editorial Office; and several experts and scholars from the Brain Disease Center, Department of Radiology, and other departments of Ruijin Hospital.

Focusing on the Frontier: RIPK1 Regulatory Mechanisms and Neurodegenerative Diseases

The inaugural invited speaker, Prof. Zhang Tao, is a recipient of the Harvard University Outstanding Chinese Life Sciences Research Award, the 2023 Shanghai Baiyu Plan Young Talent, and the Shanghai “Shuguang Plan” awardee. Prof. Zhang Tao graduated from Fudan University in 2007 and received his Ph.D. in 2013 from the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, under the mentorship of Professor Yuan Junying, a renowned expert in the field of cell death and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. From 2015 to 2023, he completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and joined the Songjiang Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in May 2023.

Prof. Zhang Tao presented a talk titled “Kinase RIPK1 and Cell Fate Determination,” systematically introducing his team’s latest research findings on the regulatory mechanisms and physiological and pathological functions of RIPK1. RIPK1 is a key regulatory molecule in cell death and inflammatory signaling pathways and plays a significant role in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Prof. Zhang Tao’s related achievements, published as first author in top international journals such as Science, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Communications, and eLife, provide important theoretical foundations for understanding the molecular mechanisms of cell death and inflammation.

In-Depth Commentary: Cloud-Based Interaction Sparks Innovative Thinking

Prof. Lu Yong served as the guest commentator, providing professional feedback on Prof. Zhang Tao’s presentation. Participating experts engaged in lively discussions via the online platform on topics such as potential therapeutic targets of RIPK1 in neurological diseases, the complexity of the cell death regulatory network, and the translation of basic research findings into clinical applications. The online interaction was vibrant and dynamic.

Building a Platform: Supporting the Development of Clinical Neuroscience

Master Forum, a series of academic events jointly organized by the Clinical Neuroscience Center, Ruijin Hospital and the LMD Editorial Office, aims to invite leading scholars from home and abroad to share the latest research findings, fostering academic exchange and collaboration in the field of clinical neuroscience. The LMD Editorial Office will continue to leverage its role as an academic publishing platform to facilitate the dissemination and translation of high-level scientific research achievements, contributing to the hospital's disciplinary development and research innovation.

Finally, Prof. Lu Yong comprehensively introduced the strategic cooperation blueprint and core resource advantages of Ruijin Hospital. He highlighted that the hospital is focusing on three major directions: rare disease drug development, clinical technology innovation, and basic research, striving to build a complete innovation chain from basic research to clinical translation. Prof. Lu Yong noted that this event, coinciding with the Youth Day in China, holds special and profound significance. He encouraged young researchers to grow alongside the journal, expressed strong recognition for the LMD journal platform, reviewed the research achievements published by the Clinical Neuroscience Center, Ruijin Hospital in the journal, and expressed hope that this newly established academic journal of Ruijin Hospital and the hospital's young experts would mutually support and advance together. Moving forward, the Clinical Neuroscience Center, Ruijin Hospital and the LMD Editorial Office will jointly launch a series of academic activities.
