The Flow Cytometry Resource (FCR), part of the Center for Advanced Research Technologies (CART) at University of Rochester Medicine, has been selected for the 2026 class of Recognized Shared Resource Laboratories by the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC). This prestigious designation highlights the facility’s sustained excellence in operations and its adherence to internationally recognized best practices in cytometry. Notably, it is the only academic medical center laboratory recognized in this cycle.
Led by co-scientific directors Tim Bushnell, PhD and Ravi Misra, PhD, technical director Matt Cochran, MS, and director of development Wojciech Wojciechowski, PhD, the Flow Cytometry Resource delivers a comprehensive portfolio of advanced cytometry services to the University of Rochester research community. These capabilities include analytical and spectral flow cytometry, high-parameter cell sorting, imaging cytometry, and mass cytometry. Together, the team and infrastructure serve as a critical enabling platform for rigorous, high-quality, and reproducible research across a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines.
“This recognition from ISAC underscores what our user community already knows: that our Flow Cytometry Resource is simply outstanding, and that it has consistently made cutting-edge instrumentation and technology available to our research community,” said Stephen Dewhurst, PhD, Vice President for Research. “ISAC’s recognition serves to further highlight both the technical excellence of the team and the critical role they play in advancing discovery across our institution.”
The ISAC Shared Resource Laboratory (SRL) Recognition Program acknowledges laboratories that demonstrate exceptional operational standards and a strong commitment to best practices as defined in the landmark 2016 publication on SRL best practices (Cytometry Part A). Recognition is awarded through a rigorous, multi-stage peer review process evaluating seven core domains: operations; staff and infrastructure; quality assurance; training and education; data management; laboratory safety; and standard operating procedures.
“This recognition is a testament to the dedicated scientists in the facility for their continued commitment to providing access to the latest technical advances and to adherence to internationally recognized standards of operation,” added Paula Vertino, PhD, Senior Associate Dean of Basic Research. “The ultimate benefit is realized by our research community, strengthening the institution’s capacity for high-impact discovery and innovation.”
ISAC’s recognition program is designed not only to acknowledge excellence but also to promote continuous improvement across shared resource laboratories worldwide. By aligning with ISAC standards, the FCR ensures that investigators at URochester Medicine have access to cutting-edge technologies supported by rigorous quality frameworks—enhancing the reproducibility, reliability, and overall impact of their research.
The formal announcement of the 2026 recognized laboratories will be made by ISAC in the coming months, with the official award presentation scheduled for the ISAC CYTO conference.
