BU Faculty Named Chair-Elect of the American Board of Family Medicine Board of Directors
(Boston)—Stephen A. Wilson, MD, MPH, FAAFP, chair of the department of family medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, was recently named chair-elect of the eighteen-member American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Board of Directors. The Chair-Elect has a one-year term. His primary duties will include serving on the nine-member executive committee, chairing the operations committee, leading in the Chair's absence, preparing for his upcoming term as the Chair, being a member of the ABFM Foundation, send serving on the professionalism, communication, and residency task force committees. Wilson, who also is chief of family medicine at Boston Medical Center, has served on the board since 2023.
Wilson received his medical and public health degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his internship and residency in family medicine, and a faculty development fellowship, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) St. Margaret Hospital and served as director of medical decision making education for UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency and director of University of Pittsburgh-UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship.
Wilson has published more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters, handbooks, and letters to the editor. Faculty and students have recognized his teaching and mentoring at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Penn State College of Medicine. He and team members have been recognized for their research and scholarship by American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
He has served on the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration’s Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry and on the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in a number of positions including president of its board of directors. Wilson is a Diplomate of the ABFM and member of the AAFP, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors, and National Medical Association
Established in 1969 to serve the public, ABFM is a not-for-profit, private organization which provides independent assessments of qualifying family physicians.
