Call for paper | Advanced Lightweight Materials and Structures

SciOpen

This special issue, Advanced Lightweight Materials and Structures, invited by Chinese Journal of Aeronautics, aims to bring together cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews that address the data-driven development and evaluation of advanced lightweight materials (e.g. metals and alloys, composites and nanocomposites, coatings and cellular materials) and structures for airframes, aeroengines, helicopters, drones, etc. The primary focus is on bridging the critical gap between innovative manufacturing, materials characterization, AI-enhanced predictive modeling, and ultimately aeronautic performance assurance in service.

We solicit contributions that explore the synergistic advancements across the entire lifecycle of lightweight materials and structures, from their conceptual design and manufacture to their validation and deployment. The issue will highlight interdisciplinary approaches that combine material science, mechanics, manufacturing engineering, and data science, including machine/deep learning and AI-enabled design paradigms, to push the boundaries of performance, efficiency, and reliability.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

● Advanced Manufacturing and Processing Technologies

● Data-Driven Characterization and Intelligent Evaluation

● Theoretical and Numerical Modeling

● Materials Digital Twins

● Structural Reliability, Damage Accumulation and Performance Validation

● Integrated Process-Structure-Performance Design

Guest Editors

Professor Dianyin Hu is a National-Level Leading Talent and Executive Deputy Dean of the Research Institute of Aero-Engine at Beihang University. Her research focuses on the structural strength and reliability of aero-engines. Professor Hu has led a series of major research projects, including fundamental research programs under national major science and technology initiatives, National Key R&D Programs, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and civil aircraft research programs supported by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. She has published over 200 journal papers, co-authored four academic monographs and textbooks, and holds more than 70 authorized invention patents as the first inventor. Her honors include two First Prizes of provincial/ministerial-level science and technology awards, and the 17th China Youth Science and Technology Award.

Regius Professor Philip Withers is a professor of materials at the University of Manchester and Monash University. As an internationally leading authority in materials characterization and structural integrity, his pioneering interdisciplinary research focuses on developing and applying in-situ characterization techniques to track 3D regions-of-interest across scales from meters to nanometers, providing critical knowledge for ensuring the reliability of advanced materials in service. Professor Withers is a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), a Member of Academia Europaea (MAE), and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). In 2012, he became the inaugural Director of the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials, and in 2017 he was appointed as the inaugural Regius Professor of Materials and Chief Scientist of the newly established Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials. His honors include the Queen’s Anniversary Prize awarded to the University of Manchester, and the Royal Society Armourers & Brasiers’ Company Prize.

Dr. Ying Wang is an associate professor in the Research Institute of Aero-Engine at Beihang University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in 2015, supervised by Regius Professor Philip Withers and Professor Constantinos Soutis. Her research focuses on assessing the multi-scale mechanical behavior of advanced polymer-, metal- and ceramic-matrix composite materials, primarily using X-ray imaging and diffraction techniques. In recognition of her contributions to uncovering the damage mechanisms in composite materials, she was honored with the Composites Science and Technology Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2021.

Dr. Tinglian Zhang received his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University, China, in 2023. He was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland, and is currently a Postdoctoral Scientist at ESRF – The European Synchrotron. His research focuses on advanced structural integrity assessment using large-scale research facilities, with an emphasis on hard X-ray imaging of metal additive manufacturing and in situ property evaluation.
