AI Interactive Quiz Pedagogy

This AI-driven interactive quiz pedagogy system utilizes advanced artificial intelligence to generate adaptive quizzes from various content sources, enriching educational experiences through dynamic, personalized learning support

Research Foundation for the State University of New York

This AI-driven interactive quiz pedagogy system uses advanced AI to generate adaptive quizzes from diverse content sources, enriching educational experiences with dynamic, personalized learning support.

Background:

Traditional quiz methods often lack adaptability and fail to address the varying knowledge levels of individual students, limiting their effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes. Educators at SUNY Oswego identified a need for an innovative solution that could transform static quizzes into interactive learning tools. The aim was to create a system capable of automatically generating quiz questions from diverse educational materials, while providing real-time, context-sensitive assistance to students who struggle to find answers. This led to the development of an AI-powered quiz system that applies the Socratic method to better engage students and deepen their understanding.

Technology Overview:

The AI-driven interactive quiz pedagogy system is designed to dynamically generate quizzes from multiple input formats, including text documents, PDFs, and web pages. Leveraging artificial intelligence, particularly through integration with OpenAI models, the system analyzes the provided content to automatically create relevant and varied quiz questions. This process reduces instructor workload and enables rapid quiz generation aligned with course materials. When students answer questions incorrectly, the system responds with hints and supplementary resources, following a Socratic approach that encourages critical thinking rather than simply providing answers. This interactive feedback loop is tailored to the student’s individual knowledge level, promoting a more personalized and effective learning experience. Implemented in Python, the software utilizes libraries such as customtkinter for its graphical user interface, ensuring ease of use and accessibility in different educational environments. The standalone application architecture supports deployment for classroom tests, homework assignments, and self-directed study sessions. Through AI augmentation, this tool enhances traditional quiz-taking by actively engaging students and adapting to their needs, thus bridging gaps in comprehension and supporting deeper learning.

Advantages:

•    AI-Powered Question Generation: Automatically creates quiz questions from diverse educational materials, saving educators time and effort.
•    Adaptive Learning Support: Uses the Socratic method to provide targeted hints and additional resources, fostering critical thinking and personalized guidance.
•    Multi-Format Compatibility: Capable of processing various content types, including PDFs, texts, and web pages, for versatile quiz creation.
•    User-Friendly Interface: Built with Python and customtkinter, offering a straightforward and accessible application for both instructors and students.
•    Scalable Use Cases: Suitable for classroom testing, homework, and self-study across different educational settings and subjects.
•    Enhanced Student Engagement: Transforms quizzes from static evaluations into dynamic learning tools that respond to student input.

Applications:

•    Introductory astronomy courses, serving as the primary targeted educational domain.
•    General classroom assessments across various subjects require flexible and adaptive quizzes.
•    Homework assignments where students can benefit from immediate, AI-supported feedback.
•    Self-paced learning and revision exercises for individual learners seeking interactive study aids.
•    Educational institutions aiming to integrate AI technologies to modernize teaching and evaluation methods.

About the State University of New York

The State University of New York is the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States, and more than 95 percent of all New Yorkers live within 30 miles of any one of SUNY’s 64 colleges and universities. Across the system, SUNY has four academic health centers, five hospitals, four medical schools, two dental schools, a law school, the country’s oldest school of maritime, the state's only college of optometry, 12 Educational Opportunity Centers, over 30 ATTAIN digital literacy labs, and manages one US Department of Energy National Laboratory. In total, SUNY serves about 1.7 million students across its portfolio of credit- and non-credit-bearing courses and programs, continuing education, and community outreach programs. SUNY oversees nearly a quarter of academic research in New York. Research expenditures system-wide are nearly $1.5 billion in fiscal year 2025, including significant contributions from students and faculty. There are more than three million SUNY alumni worldwide, and annually one in three New Yorkers who earn a college degree is a SUNY alum.
