Controlling Diabetes: Meet Your Artificial Pancreas

The controller responded to venous blood glucose measured every five minutes using the FDA-approved GlucoScout (International Biomedical) and commanded insulin-glucagon control doses. The doses were administered using FDA-approved Deltec CoZmo infusion pumps (Smiths Medical). This image relates to an article that appeared in the April 14, 2010, issue of Science Translational Medicine. The study, by Dr. F.H. El-Khatib of Boston University in Boston, Mass., and colleagues was titled, "A Bihormonal Closed-Loop Artificial Pancreas for Type 1 Diabetes." view more
